A3009 Mini Digital Multimeter Pen User Manual

1 Introduction

The A3009 Mini Digital Multimeter Pen is a smart, voice-broadcast testing tool designed for professional and home use. It offers a wide range of measurement capabilities including AC/DC voltage, resistance, capacitance, diode, and features like NCV non-contact induction, phase sequence detection, and live wire identification. Its compact pen-style design and VA colour reverse display make it convenient for various electrical testing scenarios.

I have added information to this document from my experience with this multimeter and changed a few things which did not correspond to the instrument I received.

In my opinion this is obviously not a professional instrument but more than adequate for normal measurements around the shack.

2 Layout

From the positive tip test point moving towards the rear there is a half moon indentation  with the signal indicator and above that the display, Then there are 3 buttons marked N/L/P then Hold and then Select/Power. The negative probe then plugs into the far end of the multimeter pen (see below). On the rear side about half way down is a small latch to release the battery cover. Insert a 1.5Volt AAA battery with the positive terminal towards the tip of the multimeter.
The tip is the positive terminal and has a rubber protector on it which you need to remove. There is a black negative lead and probe which has to be plugged into the end of the multimeter. But before you can do that you need to remove the rubber protection from the end of this lead.
Mine came with an accessory kit which contains a number of different probes which can be screwed into the multimeter to replace the standard probe and also a crocodile clip, you can push the point of the negative probe into one end of the crocodile clip and then use the crocodile end to clip onto the negative terminal of whatever you are testing but personally I find it easier to use a short length of wire with a crocodile clip on each end and clip one to the negative probe and the other to the negative terminal/case of the item being tested.

3 Safety Information

Always observe basic safety precautions when using this multimeter to avoid personal injury or damage to the meter or equipment under test. Read the following safety information carefully before use:

    • Do not exceed the maximum voltage ratings specified for each function.

    • Exercise extreme caution when working with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC. Such voltages pose a shock hazard.

    • Before measuring resistance, capacitance, or diode, ensure that the circuit under test is de-energized and all high-voltage capacitors are discharged.

    • Do not use the meter if it appears damaged or if the insulation on the test leads is compromised.

    • Ensure the battery cover is securely closed before operation.

    • Do not operate the meter in explosive gas, vapor, or dust environments.

    • Use the correct function and range for each measurement.

    • Keep fingers behind the finger guards on the test probes during measurements.

4 Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

The A3009 Multimeter Pen operates on a single 1.5V AAA battery. To install or replace the battery:

    • Locate the battery cover (1) at the top of the multimeter pen.

    • Open the battery cover.

    • Insert one 1.5V AAA battery, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).

    • Close the battery cover securely.

4.2 Connecting the Test Lead

To use the included test lead for certain measurements (e.g., resistance, capacitance, diode):

    • Insert the black test lead plug into the top cover of the multimeter pen. Ensure it is fully inserted for a secure connection.

5 Operating Instructions

5.1 Power On/Off and Function Switching

    • Power On/Off: Long press the Power/Function Switch button (3) for approximately 2 seconds to turn the multimeter on or off.

    • Function Switching: Once powered on you are in auto mode good for DC voltage measurement and resistance measurement. Single press the Power/Function Switch button (3) to cycle through available measurement functions (e.g., DC Voltage, AC Voltage, Capacitance, Diode (Buzzer) and Temperature in Centigrade, Temperature in Fahrenheit

5.2 Voice Broadcast

The A3009 features real-time English voice broadcast of measured data. In my multimeter this is always on and is clear and easily understandable but has a Chinese accent. However the manual says that a 2 second long push on the power button can activate and deactivate the voicing but on mine it simply turns the multimeter off, so voicing is always on. The voicing takes place once the measurement display settles so the time before voicing can vary between almost immediately to several seconds.

5.3 Measurement Functions

The multimeter automatically recognizes the measurement type in most cases. Cycle through functions using the Power/Function Switch button (3).

    • AC Voltage Measurement:

Range: 0.8-1000V. Resolution: 0.001-1V. Accuracy: ±(1.2% +5d).

Place the test tip into the AC circuit to measure. The display will show the voltage value.

    • DC Voltage Measurement:

Range: 0.8-700V. Resolution: 0.001-1V. Accuracy: ±(1.5% +8d).

Place the test tip into the DC circuit to measure. The display will show the voltage value.

    • Resistance Measurement:

Range: 0.1-600M?. Resolution: 0.1?-1A. Accuracy: ±(3.5%+8d).

Ensure the circuit is de-energized. Connect the test tip to the component to measure resistance. The multimeter will automatically recognize and display the resistance value.

    • Capacitance Measurement:

Range: 10nF-60mF. Resolution: 0.1?-10k?. Accuracy: ±(1.5%+5d).

Ensure the capacitor is fully discharged before testing. Connect the test tip to the capacitor terminals. The display will show the capacitance value.

    • Diode Test:

Switch to the diode gear. Connect the test tip across the diode to distinguish its positive and negative characteristics and measure the forward voltage drop.

    • Buzzer (Continuity) Test:

If the resistance is below a certain threshold (indicating continuity), the buzzer will sound. This is useful for checking fuses or circuit connections

5.4 Special Functions (Using Button 5)

    • NCV Non-Contact Power Induction:

Press the N/L/P button (5) to select EF induction mode. When AC voltage is detected nearby, the signal indicator will flash red and a buzzer alarm will sound, indicating the presence of voltage without direct contact.

    • Phase Sequence Detection:

After bringing the pen tip close to the phase line, complete the test for ABC phases. The display will show the test results on the screen.

    • Zero-Fire Line Identification (LIVE Mode):

Press the N/L/P button (5) to select LIVE mode. Then, insert the pen tip into the jack to identify the live (fire) line from the neutral (zero) line.

    • Flashlight Lighting:

Long press the N/L/P button (5) to activate the flashlight. This assists in working in dim environments and helps in finding lines or seeing the screen value clearly.

5.5 Data Hold

Press the HOLD button (4) to freeze the current reading on the display. Press it again to release the hold and resume live readings.

6 Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning

Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the test tip clean and free of debris.

6.2 Battery Replacement

When the battery indicator appears on the display, replace the 1.5V AAA battery as described in Section 4.1. Remove the battery if the meter is not to be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.

6.3 Detachable Tip

The nickel-plated tip is detachable. Unscrew it with pliers if needed to replace with different measuring nibs (not included) or for cleaning.
